BLOG POST #6

Another six weeks of healthy living and delicious food have passed by in a flash. I’m still loving the recipes and a relaxing day for me is spent reviewing my menu plan for the coming week and pre-cooking delicious meals to freeze, ready for those days when I need something quick and effortless for dinner time.

Get our FREE freezing guide download here.

I’ve made loads of Mediterranean burgers and various chicken kebabs in case the sun comes out and the BBQ can be dusted off, but the weather has seen us mostly enjoying them cooked under the grill in the kitchen!

I’m delighted to say that I am now in the healthy BMI range, having lost a little over 5st 7lbs, and I have just 7lbs to go to reach my goal!

I have rediscovered my ‘skinny’ wardrobe and love going out with confidence in how I look. I’ve even been seen in a skirt! This weekend I found a bag of clothes in a storage cupboard that I’d completely forgotten about. It was full of clothes that look so small I was sure they wouldn’t fit. I carried them into the bedroom for a trying on session and every single thing fits me – even a pair of jeans that are labelled size 8! My old ‘baggy’ clothes are now just that and are in a black bin bag, ready to go out the door! I won’t be needing them again!

I’m taking a very laid back approach to losing these last few pounds.

When I’ve lost weight in the past I’ve made a huge effort to get over the finishing line and each time it just reinforced the idea that the diet was over and now I could go back to ‘real’ food. This time it’s been real food since day one, so there’s no sense of ‘thank goodness that’s over’.

And this time I’m going for a relaxed transition to maintaining.

I’m happy with how I look, I have a wardrobe of clothes that fit and I feel good in, and I’m enjoying my new lifestyle. I still keep to my calorie target on most days and always make sure that the weekly average is within my target, but if there’s a special occasion (or a special treat is calling me!), then I don’t worry if I go a few calories over my daily target. I’m never over by many so I don’t have too many to ‘reclaim’ another day and the flexibility is good practice for when I’m at my goal.

On wards and downwards!

BLOG POST #5

It’s about six weeks since my last update, but all is going well, despite some stressful times…

I’ve been really busy, as has my husband Mike, so our routine has been changed on a regular basis. Luckily, as I love cooking the recipes, I’d had a couple of sessions in the kitchen stocking up my own ‘ready meal’ stash in the freezer. This meant that the last-minute changes to our planned meals didn’t have me ringing for a take away. Instead, I was able to have my own fake aways; Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chicken Bhuna, and Pressure Cooker Risotto from the new cook book all came to my rescue and kept me on track.

You can get some great tips from the free Hairy Bikers’ Diet Club freezer guide, with the dos and don’ts, plus some fab ideas.

Despite life stresses, something must have clicked with me along this journey, because instead of turning to comfort eating, I used other ways to cope. I didn’t reach for the chocolate, take aways or crisps like I used to. It wasn’t even that I was tempted and somehow resisted, but that I simply didn’t crave them. This is a huge change for me and I’m hoping I’ve said goodbye to that bad habit for good.

With being so busy, exercise has been less frequent in the past few weeks. The wet weather here in Ireland hasn’t helped either. I’ve been soaked more times than I can remember! I need to get back on track with that now that life is calming down a bit. I’ve continued to lose weight though so it just shows that it’s mainly what we eat and drink that effects the number on the scales.

I’m delighted to say that this week I weighed in 5st lighter than I was when I started! I reached my last mini goal this week, so now it’s just my ultimate goal weight to go. I’m just crossing into the healthy weight BMI range and I’ve lost 45″ in total.

I would never have believed that I could get this far and eat such delicious food while losing weight. The recipes continue to delight me and I look forward to each new recipe I try. The new book is brilliant and we’ve already found some new favourite meals. The Szechuan chicken stir fry and the pork medallions with BBQ sauce are amazing!

Onwards and downwards! My ultimate goal weight is within sight!

BLOG POST #4

I’m just back from my two-and-a-half week holiday to the island of Jersey, and I am happy to report that even while I was away I have lost weight. I am over the moon!

At my last weigh in before our holiday, I was 11st 0.5lb, and that was just under three weeks ago. This morning I weighed in at 10st 9lbs, so a 5lbs loss.

During our holiday, we celebrated our four-year wedding anniversary, four different birthdays and two Bank Holiday weekends. So it’s fair to say that meals out and extra treats were involved.

So how did I do it? Well let me share with you…

ONE OF THE MAIN THINGS WAS THAT I CHOSE SELF-CATERING, SO I FELT FAIRLY CONFIDENT AS WE LOVE THE HAIRY BIKERS’ DIET CLUB RECIPES, SO IT MADE IT EASIER TO STAY ON TRACK.

I volunteered to cook to help me stay on my plan. Breakfasts were easy as it was either a Diet Club-style full cooked breakfast or fruit. I thought my friends might want to eat out for lunch, but they seemed delighted with my picnics! I bought the recipe e-books so I didn’t have to pack them in my luggage, so I used these for dinners.

Wine and extras did feature more than usual, but overall I stayed within my calories even with the extras. I also walked a lot more than I would usually, so that helped balance everything out.

I TOOK SPOON AND CUP MEASURES ON HOLIDAY WITH ME, AND I WENT SHOPPING ON THE FIRST DAY AND GOT SOME KITCHEN SCALES SO I COULD WEIGH EVERYTHING PROPERLY.

I even found some bathroom scales on offer that were the same as my scales at home so I even weighed myself as usual.

I continued to use my online diary daily while I was away too. I usually complete my diary ahead of time as I plan my week’s meals beforehand and I continued to do that for the days I was cooking. For my eating out days I filled in the meals I could in advance and then filled in the rest as I went along. Of course there was some adjusting to be done, especially when an extra glass of wine was offered!

We did stay in a hotel for two nights, which was slightly more challenging. Especially because I hadn’t been out to eat since I started with the Diet Club so I wasn’t sure how well I’d do with food I didn’t have control over.

HOWEVER, I SIMPLY USED THE HAIRY BIKERS’ ONLINE DIARY TO LOOK UP THE BEST OPTIONS BY PUTTING THE VARIOUS CHOICES INTO MY DIARY AND SEEING WHICH HAD THE LOWEST CALORIES. THIS ALLOWED ME TO ENJOY EATING AT A RESTAURANT WITOUT BLOWING MY DIET PLAN.

As I mentioned, we enjoyed lots of celebrations while on our break, from birthdays to wedding anniversaries, so dinners, drinks and extra treats were aplenty. However, I’ve learnt from this and now feel much more confident handling meals out and still eating healthily.

I kept in touch on the forums while I was away too. This helped me stay motivated and on track, as I could see how everyone was getting on and their successes helped me to stay focused and reminded me why I want to lose the weight.

BEING HAPPIER WITH THE WAY I LOOK AND HAVING BAGS MORE ENERGY REALLY HELPED ME TO ENJOY MY TIME AWAY AND I’M MORE DETERMINED THAN EVER TO REACH MY GOAL.

On top of my 5lbs weight loss during my holiday, I can now get into my skinniest jeans, and they even look slightly baggy! It’s the best holiday souvenir I could have asked for!

I’ve continued using the three books as my main source of recipe ideas. I was tending to keep going back to my favourites – sweet and sour chicken, sausages with rich onion gravy, chicken Bhuna and cassoulet, so I spent a happy afternoon reading though all three books again choosing recipes I hadn’t tried yet. Pan Haggerty Lite has been a real hit, and the lasagne, and Moroccan style chicken with vegetable couscous. Every recipe I try turns out to be a winner!

I also use the online diary all the time! I plan my meals for the week ahead and enter it all into the diary. I then just amend it where I need to and add snacks as I go along. I have my iPad next to me all the time so I check diary throughout the day to see how many calories I have available if I fancy a snack, and to remind myself what I have to look forward to for dinner!

THE ONLINE DIARY IS THE FEATURE THAT REALLY HELPS ME SUCCEED. IT’S MY ‘DIET BUDDY’ THAT KEEPS ME ON TRACK BY KEEPING MY CALORIES IN MY MIND AT THE SAME TIME AS REMINDING ME OF THE NEXT DELICIOUS MEAL!

My exercise routine has been the same, but I’m finding it a lot easier as the weight comes off. Dog walking and mucking out stables are part of my daily routine and I’ve dug out my weighted hula hoop. I now hula hoop away while watching TV!

I’m delighted with the results I’m seeing on the scales and the tape measure, but the biggest change over the last week or so has been in my attitude to food and dieting. I used to swing between seeing food as my best friend and then my enemy. I was either in an “eat everything” mode or “eat next to nothing” mode. Now I really enjoy my meals, they satisfy my love of delicious food and I’m getting into the best shape I’ve been in for years. Still a long way to reach my goal, but I’m on my way!

As of this morning I’m now 11st 6.5lb, so I’m over half way to my ultimate goal! I’ve really settled into the plan now, and the Hairy Bikers’ Diet Club way of eating has become second nature.

MY IDEA OF PORTION SIZE HAS IMPROVED NO END. I’VE ALWAYS EATEN HUGE AMOUNTS OF FOOD IN THE PAST, NEVER REALLY KNOWING WHEN I’D HAD ENOUGH. I DON’T FEEL LIKE I’M DIETING. I’M EATING DELICIOUS FOOD AND ENJOYING THE NEW RECIPES AS I TRY THEM. AND BECAUSE THE DIET IS SO FLEXIBLE I CAN CHOSE MEALS THAT I REALLY WANT TO EAT SO THERE’S ALWAYS A REAL TREAT COMING!

Also I’m finding that exercise is becoming so much easier as my weight comes down. I have much more spring in my step when I walk the dogs and old aches and pains have disappeared.

I find I get a lot of motivation from the Results page as I can see how far I’ve come. I look at it if I’m having a wobble and can feel temptation creeping in. I read the articles in the Healthy Living section and I also join in with the forum discussions and find that the support there really helps me to stay motivated.

I have a holiday coming up in couple of weeks so trying to do as well as I can until we leave and then planning to be eat as healthily as possible while away. I don’t want to gain too many pounds while I’m on holiday!

These past three weeks I’ve stayed with 1200 calories and lost just under 8lbs!

I’ve continued using the three books as my main source of recipe ideas. BLOG POST #1

I’ve just completed my eighth week with the Hairy Bikers Diet Club. So far I’ve lost 2st 5lb and 22.5 inches in total, including 7.5 inches off my waist! To say I’m delighted would be a huge understatement.

I love my food (hence why I’m so good at gaining excess weight!) and I’ve had the three Hairy Biker diet books on my cookery shelf for a couple of years, along with some of their other ‘full fat’ cookery books, but didn’t get down to shedding the weight.

2016 arrived and I was feeling fat, frumpy and approaching my fifties! I’ve lost lots of weight over the years using two different weekly meeting slimming clubs, on my own counting calories, with a low-carb diet book, etc. I’ve done them all and I’d loose weight only to pile it straight back on when I stop following their plan to the letter. I don’t think any of them ever let me combine my love of food and cooking with being healthy.

THE HAIRY BIKERS’ DIET CLUB IS THE FIRST PLAN I’VE EVER FOLLOWED THAT FEELS LIKE A POSSIBLE WAY TO LIVE LONG TERM, ENJOYING MY FOOD AND BEING SLIM!

I have a good way still to go to reach my goal, but I’m loving every day. When I plan my meals for the week ahead I’m actually excited about what I’ll be cooking and eating! The Hairy Bikers’ Diet Club rocks!

Come back soon for Sara’s next installment to discover how she is getting on and remember to chat to her on the forums…
