Kerrie Handford, an artist from Derbyshire, lost 4st and dropped from a size 24 to a 14 with the Hairy Bikers’ Diet Club*! After losing a friend to weight-related health problems, she swore that she would get fit and healthy to live long and see her own children get married and have a family. Before she lost the weight, Kerrie was very much like Si & Dave in terms of her attitude towards food. “I just ate whatever I wanted and I never said no. I’ve always been a cook and love food. I make everything from scratch and hate processed food. I love the Hairy Bikers and cooked from their recipe books a lot. I guess I was in the same boat as them: I cooked good food, but it was high in fat and a lot of what I shouldn’t have.”
But then something happened that made Kerrie realise she had to address her own health. “I lost someone close to me, so I decided to do everything I could to live as long possible so I could see my children get married and have their own families.”
The weight-loss journey was made easier for Kerrie because of the wholesome meal plans.
“The food made it so unlike a diet. I was never hungry. I don’t think I would have done so well without the Hairy Bikers’ Diet Club online diary which helped me learn about how many calories are in foods.”
Motivation was never a problem for Kerrie. “I had clothes I wanted to get back into. The pleasure of getting back into them was one thing, but having to alter them and take inches off with my sewing machine was even better!”
The changes for Kerrie since the weight loss have been huge. “I feel so much fitter, I’m never tired and I look better in the clothes I love. My legs are so powerful and I nearly have a decent bum. I also have a core now, although I didn’t even know what that was before! Plus, simply being able to keep up with my kids means the world to me.”
She does admit however that she now sometimes struggles to recognise her new body.
“I look very different. I sometimes forget I’ve lost so much weight and surprise myself when I look in the mirror. I always told myself being a size 14 raher than a 24 would be a dream come true, and now it is!”
Up next is another huge challenge for Kerrie. “I am going to have a go at a 5 mile fell race (running up hills) in September. I used to think people who did that were super fit crazy people, but now I think it cant be too hard. I’d say that’s progress!”
Kerrie’s top tips
- Buy something you’d love to fit in and work to get in it.
- Take pictures of your changes.
- Write down everything you eat in the Hairy Bikers online diary; it really gets you thinking about what you eat.
- Swap crisps for popcorn. Salt and sweet is great because it sorts out both the cravings.
- Frozen yoghurt instead of ice cream works for me. 10-calorie jelly and frozen yoghurt with dried fruit and nuts makes a great pudding.

- Just get on with it, stop putting it off!
- Once you’re over the worst few weeks its easy and you’ll wonder what all fuss was about.
